What is a Referendum Petition?
When City Council passes a new law, known as an ordinance, it generally goes into effect either immediately or within a few months after passing. Voters can offer input during City Council hearings, but beyond that the Council needs no approval to pass an ordinance.
UNLESS the voters gather signatures for a Referendum Petition which requires the people of Los Angeles vote on the ordinance BEFORE it becomes a law. A Referendum is our chance to say "NO!".

How does a Recall happen?
Remember when Californians decided they no longer wanted Gray Davis to serve as Governor, so they took him out of office? That's a Recall!
Recalls begin by gathering signatures of support and are often used when an elected official is unable or unwilling to uphold the will of the people, or abuses their power. After enough valid signatures are gathered (everyone who signs MUST be a registered voter!), a recall election is held and a new official will hold that office.

How is a Recall different for a city versus a county?
The amount of signatures needed to be successful is the major difference between city and county recalls. Who you are attempting to recall determines what protocol you use- city officials, such as the Mayor, or county officials, like the District Attorney.

What does it take to be successful?
Like most things in life, funding is the most important part. It takes a great deal of time and careful preparation to draft petitions and gather signatures, and resources to complete all of that hard work!
